Your energy bill is too high. You know it, I know it. Here are the changes that actually make a difference, ranked by effort.

Zero Effort (Just Do It Today)

Switch provider. Go to an energy comparison site, enter your zip code, and see if there's a cheaper plan. Takes 10 minutes. Average savings: $300-500/year. Set a calendar reminder to do it again in 12 months.

Adjust your thermostat by 2 degrees. You won't notice 2 degrees. Your bill will. Every degree saves roughly 3% on heating costs. In winter, set it to 68°F instead of 70°F. In summer, 76°F instead of 74°F.

Switch to LED bulbs. If you still have old incandescent bulbs, each one you replace saves $5-10/year. A house full of LEDs saves $100+/year.

Low Effort (One Weekend)

Seal drafts. Feel around windows and doors for cold air. Weatherstripping costs $5-10 per door and takes 15 minutes to install. Draft excluders for the bottom of doors: $8 each. Total investment: $30-50. Savings: $100-200/year.

Insulate your water heater. A water heater blanket costs $20-30 and reduces heat loss by 25-45%. Pays for itself in 2 months.

Use a smart power strip. Electronics draw power even when "off" (phantom load). A smart strip cuts power to devices when they're not in use. $25 per strip, saves $50-100/year.

Medium Effort (Worth the Investment)

Smart thermostat. Nest or Ecobee: $100-250. Learns your schedule and adjusts automatically. Average savings: 10-15% on heating/cooling. Pays for itself in one season. Many utility companies offer rebates that cover half the cost.

Ceiling fans. In summer, a ceiling fan lets you raise the AC by 4 degrees without feeling warmer. Costs $3/month to run vs $50+/month for AC.

Curtains. Thick curtains in winter keep heat in. Open curtains on sunny days let solar heat in for free. Close them at sunset. This alone can save 10% on heating.

The Math

If your current bill is $200/month:
  • Switch provider: save $30/month
  • Thermostat adjustment: save $6/month
  • LED bulbs: save $8/month
  • Draft sealing: save $12/month
  • Smart thermostat: save $25/month

Total: $81/month saved = $972/year. From changes that cost under $300 total to implement.
