I Keep Saying I'll Start Monday and I Never Do

Category: Getting Unstuck | Read time: 4 min

The gym membership starts Monday. The diet starts Monday. The job search starts Monday. Monday comes and you don't start. Next Monday. Same thing. You've been "starting Monday" for 6 months.

Why Monday Doesn't Work

Monday is a fantasy. It's far enough away that it doesn't feel real, so your brain agrees to it without any intention of following through. It's the same reason New Year's resolutions fail — the commitment feels good, the execution never arrives.

The Fix: Start Today, Start Tiny

Not Monday. Today. Right now. But here's the key: make it so small it's almost insulting.

Want to exercise? Do 5 push-ups right now. Not a full workout. Five push-ups. Done? You've started.

Want to eat better? Drink a glass of water right now. That's it. You've started.

Want to job search? Open LinkedIn right now and update one line of your profile. You've started.

The size of the action doesn't matter. The act of starting does. Your brain can't say "I'll start Monday" when you've already started today.

The Next Day Rule

    Tomorrow, do slightly more:
  • 5 push-ups → 10 push-ups
  • Glass of water → water + one piece of fruit
  • Update LinkedIn → apply to one job

The day after, slightly more again. You're building momentum so gradually that your brain doesn't resist it. By Friday, you're doing the thing you've been putting off for months — and it doesn't feel hard because you ramped up slowly.

Why Willpower Is a Trap

Willpower is a finite resource. You have less of it when you're tired, stressed, or hungry — which is most of the time. Systems beat willpower every time.

Instead of "I'll use willpower to go to the gym," try:
  • Pack your gym bag the night before
  • Put it by the front door
  • Drive to the gym straight from work (don't go home first — the couch will win)

You've removed 3 decisions. The gym becomes the default, not the exception.

The Honest Bit

You don't need motivation to start. You need to start to get motivation. It comes AFTER the action, not before. Stop waiting to feel ready. You won't. Do it anyway, do it tiny, and do it now.
