8 weeks laterBasement stayed dry through 3 heavy rainstorms after grading and sump pump installation
The Problem
Every heavy rain, I get 1-2 inches of water in my basement. I've lost furniture, boxes of photos, and a washer/dryer to water damage. I put down towels and run a shop vac but it's a losing battle. I don't know if the problem is the foundation, the grading, the gutters, or something else. A waterproofing company quoted me $15,000 and I can't afford that.
The Plan
Week 1-2: Find and Fix the Easy Stuff
Clean and extend your gutters: downspouts should direct water at least 6 feet away from the foundation โ this alone fixes 50% of basement water problems
Check the grading around your house: the ground should slope AWAY from the foundation. If it slopes toward it, add soil to create a slope
Seal visible cracks in the basement walls and floor with hydraulic cement โ $10-20 per tube
Make sure window wells have covers and proper drainage
Get a sump pump if you don't have one ($200-400 installed) โ it's the last line of defense and it works
Week 3-4: Protect and Prevent
Move everything off the basement floor: use shelving, pallets, or plastic bins โ nothing valuable should touch the floor
Install a battery backup for your sump pump โ power outages often happen during storms, exactly when you need it most
Consider a dehumidifier to prevent mold growth between flooding events
Get a water alarm ($15) that alerts you when water is detected โ early warning prevents major damage
If problems persist after gutters, grading, and sump pump, then consult a waterproofing professional โ but try the cheap fixes first

Follow-Up Result
8 weeks in: spent $350 total on gutter extensions, grading soil, crack sealant, and a sump pump. The gutter extensions were the biggest fix โ water was literally pouring off the roof and pooling against the foundation. Added 4 inches of soil around the perimeter to improve grading. Sealed 3 visible cracks in the basement walls. Installed a sump pump with battery backup. We've had 3 heavy rainstorms since and the basement has been completely dry every time. Moved everything onto shelving just in case. The $15,000 waterproofing quote was unnecessary โ the $350 in basic fixes solved the problem. Always try the simple stuff first.Know someone with this problem?
