My pet is getting old and I'm not ready to lose them
A guide to caring for an aging pet covering quality of life assessment, comfort measures, end-of-life planning, and cherishing the time you have left.
The Problem
My dog is 14 and slowing down. She can't jump on the bed anymore, she sleeps most of the day, and she has good days and bad days. I know the end is coming and I'm not ready. I don't know how to tell when it's "time," I'm terrified of making the wrong decision, and I cry every time I think about it. I want to make her remaining time as good as possible but I also need to prepare for what's coming.
The Plan
Week 1-2: Maximize Quality of Life
Talk to your vet about pain management — many older pets are in more pain than they show. Medication can dramatically improve their comfort
Make accommodations: ramps for beds and cars, orthopedic beds, non-slip rugs on hard floors, raised food bowls
Adjust exercise to their ability: shorter, slower walks. Let them sniff as much as they want — mental stimulation matters as much as physical
Feed them the good stuff: if they're not on a restricted diet, give them the treats they love. This is the time
Take photos and videos — you'll treasure these more than you can imagine
Week 3-4: Prepare for the Difficult Decisions
Learn about quality of life scales: the HHHHHMM scale (Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility, More good days than bad)
Have the conversation with your vet now, before it's urgent: "What should I watch for? When will it be time?"
Research your options: in-home euthanasia is available in most areas and is much less stressful for your pet
Talk to your family about what you want — making decisions in crisis is harder than making them in advance
Allow yourself to grieve now — anticipatory grief is real and valid. You don't have to wait until they're gone to feel the loss
