I work from home and I can never switch off

A work-from-home boundary system using physical separation, shutdown rituals, and communication strategies to stop work from bleeding into personal time.

Stopped working after 6pm consistently and reclaimed evenings and weekends

The Problem

I've been working from home for two years and the boundaries between work and life have completely dissolved. I check emails at 10pm, work through lunch, and my "office" is my kitchen table so I literally can't escape it. I'm working more hours than I ever did in the office but somehow feel less productive. My partner says I'm always distracted and never fully present. I'm burning out but I don't know how to stop when work is always right there.

The Plan

Week 1-2: Create Physical and Digital Boundaries

  • Designate a specific workspace โ€” even if it's a corner of a room, it needs to be ONLY for work
  • At the end of the workday, physically close the laptop and put it away โ€” out of sight, out of mind
  • Turn off ALL work notifications on your phone after hours โ€” Slack, email, Teams, everything
  • Set your work status to "offline" at your end time and don't apologize for it
  • If you don't have a separate room, use a visual cue: a desk lamp that's ON means working, OFF means done
  • Week 3-4: Build a Shutdown Ritual

  • Create a 5-minute end-of-day ritual: review tomorrow's tasks, close all tabs, write a "done" list, shut the laptop
  • Say out loud "the workday is over" โ€” it sounds silly but it signals your brain to switch modes
  • Change clothes after work โ€” even just swapping a shirt tells your body the context has changed
  • Go outside for even 10 minutes between "work" and "evening" โ€” a walk around the block resets your brain
  • Communicate your hours to your team: "I'm available 9-6, I'll respond to anything after that the next morning"
  • Resources

  • "Digital Minimalism" by Cal Newport โ€” strategies for controlling technology instead of it controlling you
  • Clockify โ€” free time tracker that shows you exactly how many hours you're actually working
  • r/WFH โ€” community of remote workers sharing boundary strategies
  • Follow-Up Result

4 weeks in: haven't worked past 6pm in 3 weeks. The shutdown ritual was the game-changer โ€” the physical act of closing the laptop and saying "done" creates a real boundary. Turning off notifications eliminated the "just checking" habit that always turned into an hour of work. Partner noticed the difference within days. Productivity during work hours actually increased because I'm not spread across 14 hours anymore. The walk between work and evening is now my favorite part of the day. I'm a better worker AND a better partner.
