I want to learn guitar but I keep quitting after a week

Can play 6 songs after sticking with 15-minute daily practice for two months

The Problem

I've bought a guitar three separate times. Each time I get excited, watch YouTube tutorials for a week, get frustrated that I can't play anything recognizable, and the guitar ends up collecting dust in the corner. My fingers hurt, chord changes are impossible, and I feel like I have no musical talent. But I really want to be able to play โ€” I just can't seem to stick with it.

The Plan

Week 1-2: Make It Stupidly Easy

  • Commit to just 10-15 minutes a day โ€” not an hour, not 30 minutes. Consistency beats duration every time
  • Learn only 3 chords first: G, C, and D. That's it. These three chords unlock hundreds of songs
  • Keep the guitar out of its case, on a stand, in the room where you spend the most time โ€” if it's visible, you'll pick it up
  • Use Justin Guitar (free) โ€” structured lessons that build on each other instead of random YouTube videos
  • Accept that your fingers will hurt for 2-3 weeks. Calluses form and then it stops hurting. This is normal
  • Week 3-4: Play Actual Songs

  • Once you can switch between G, C, and D, learn "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" โ€” it uses those exact chords
  • Practice chord changes with a metronome app set to a slow tempo โ€” speed comes later
  • Record yourself weekly so you can hear progress you can't feel in the moment
  • Find one guitar buddy or join an online community โ€” accountability makes a huge difference
  • Celebrate small wins: your first clean chord change, your first song all the way through
  • Resources

  • Justin Guitar โ€” best free structured guitar course on the internet
  • Fender Play โ€” paid app with excellent beginner path (free trial available)
  • Ultimate Guitar โ€” chord charts and tabs for any song you want to learn
  • r/guitarlessons โ€” supportive community for beginners
  • Follow-Up Result

8 weeks in: I can play 6 songs all the way through. The secret was the 15-minute rule โ€” some days I played longer because I was enjoying it, but I never forced myself past 15 minutes when I wasn't feeling it. Justin Guitar's structured approach meant I wasn't jumping around randomly. My calluses formed around week 3 and chord changes got dramatically easier. I played "Wonderwall" at a family barbecue last weekend and my kids were genuinely impressed. The guitar hasn't gone back in the corner once.
