Reactivity reduced by 70% using counter-conditioning and threshold training

The Problem

My 3-year-old rescue dog lunges, barks, and snarls at every dog we pass on walks. It's embarrassing and scary โ€” I'm worried they'll actually hurt another dog or pull me over. I've tried yanking the leash and saying "no" but it makes things worse. I avoid walking during busy times and cross the street when I see another dog coming. I love my dog but walks have become a stressful nightmare instead of something we both enjoy.

The Plan

Week 1-2: Understand and Manage

  • Stop punishing the behavior โ€” leash corrections and yelling increase anxiety and make reactivity worse
  • Find your dog's threshold distance: how far away can another dog be before your dog reacts? That's your starting point
  • Get a front-clip harness (like Easy Walk) for better control โ€” it redirects pulling without choking
  • Start carrying high-value treats on every walk: cheese, hot dogs, chicken โ€” something they go crazy for
  • Walk during quieter times initially to set up for success, not failure
  • Week 3-4: Counter-Conditioning

  • When you see another dog at or beyond threshold distance, immediately start feeding treats โ€” you want your dog to associate other dogs with good things
  • The sequence is: see dog โ†’ get treats. Not: be calm โ†’ get treats. You're changing the emotional response, not rewarding behavior
  • Gradually decrease the distance over weeks as your dog becomes more comfortable
  • If your dog reacts, you're too close โ€” increase distance and try again
  • Consider hiring a certified dog behaviorist (CPDT-KA or CAAB) โ€” this is their specialty and a few sessions can accelerate progress dramatically
  • Resources

  • "Feisty Fido" by Patricia McConnell โ€” short, practical book on leash reactivity
  • r/reactivedogs โ€” incredibly supportive community with daily advice
  • IAABC.org โ€” find a certified animal behaviorist near you
  • Kikopup YouTube channel โ€” excellent free videos on reactivity training
  • Follow-Up Result

8 weeks in: hired a certified behaviorist for 3 sessions and it was worth every penny. She showed me I was inadvertently tightening the leash when I saw other dogs, which was signaling to my dog that there was danger. The counter-conditioning with high-value treats has been transformative โ€” my dog now looks at me when they see another dog instead of lunging. We can walk past dogs at about 15 feet now without a reaction, down from 50 feet. Still working on closer encounters but the progress is real. Walks are actually enjoyable again.
